Your Child & Common Core State Standards
Information and links here can help you better understand CCSS and how your child will be learning these new standards.
What is "Common Core?"
The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy. See CCSSO for more historical information.

STANDARDS: SK has fully adopted the Common Core Standards and you can view each grade level's standards to help see what students will be learning, beginning 2013-14.
Student Math Practices are included with content standards. The practices are a critical part of the new standards. These describe how students interact with the content to develop critical thinking and analytical skills. Here are some resources you might look at.
Deconstructed Standards describe in more detail what each standard 'means' to support understanding of content and student math practices.
Standards Maps identify the focus standards during the year. Students have ongoing opportunities through the year to develop proficiency with all standards.
Adopted Materials identifies the materials that SK focuses on for instruction. With new standards Curriculum Specialists identify and embed additional resources (within instructional plans) that align with standards and emphasize the student practices.

INSTRUCTION Identifies the resources, supports and instructional plans for teachers. Many of these resources are targeted for staff. Instruction is planned to align with standards maps identified on the Standards page.
ASSESSMENT This is the last year students will be assessed with OAKS (Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills). Even though we are teaching CCSS this year, there are some small pieces that will be assessed on the OAKS this last year. Teachers will be attending to these during the year.
SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) begins in the spring of 2015. Students will take this assessment after spring break. This assessment is given across many states and represents a more rigorous assessment than the OAKS. For more information you are invited to look at sample items and read more at the Smarter Balanced site.
